‘Wicked’ Movie Gets 2021 Release Date From Universal


Another Broadway adaptation, “Cats,” took a vacation 2019 launch date from the studio.

The movie adaptation of Wicked, the long-running Wizard of Oz spinoff musical that first hit Broadway in 2003, has been given a launch date by Universal, the studio mentioned Friday. 

The film, to be directed by Stephen Daldry, is ready to hit theaters on Dec. 22, 2021. The movie, primarily based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 e book Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, can be produced by Marc Platt. 

Screenwriter Winnie Holsman and composer Stephen Schwarz are adapting the musical to the large display screen. The Broadway play is a perennial high grosser and in 2016 crossed the $1 billion milestone on the field workplace. It was nominated for 10 Tony awards and received three honors. 

Another tentpole that has staked its declare on Dec. 2021 is 20th Century Fox's untitled Avatar three from director James Cameron, which is ready for Dec. 17 of that 12 months. (The long-awaited Avatar 2 is ready for launch on Dec. 18, 2020.) 

Wicked had beforehand been set to open in 2019, however Universal has scheduled one other Broadway adaptation for launch this 12 months: Cats, directed by Tom Hooper and that includes a star-studded ensemble that features Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden. Cats is ready to open Dec. 20, 2019.
