It's one thing to play a guy who gets famous pretending to have invented all the Beatles' hits in a world where they no longer exist. But it's quite another to actually perform "Yesterday" in front of a studio audience and all those viewers at home on Jimmy Kimmel Live! But Yesterday star Himesh Patel was clearly up to the task on Thursday night (June 20) of recreating his character in acclaimed director Danny Boyle's upcoming musical fantasia, which also stars Lily James and Ed Sheeran as himself.
Standing alone on the Kimmel studio stage, Patel gently strummed an acoustic guitar and sang the beloved ballad back by a string quartet, gently plucking out the familiar melody and giving the vocals his unique warm, calm spin. In the film, Patel plays Jack Malik, a wannabe musician who crashes his car just as the world is plunged into darkness due to an unexplained blackout, waking up to find that he is the last person on Earth who remembers the Beatles' songs.
Yesterday, Boyle's 14 feature film, with a script by Richard Curtis (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually), is due out on June 28.
