Will Smith starring as the Genie in the recent Aladdin remake was the kind of role we've never seen him in before. Smith also brought some hip-hop flavor to the the Disney blockbuster's soundtrack, where he put his own spin on Robin Williams' 1992 "Friend Like Me" original alongside DJ Khaled. The multi-hyphenate returned on Tuesday (Aug. 6) to appear in the CGI-filled "Friend Like Me" visual.
The cinematic clip finds Smith as the big blue Genie showing Aladdin — played by Mena Massoud — all the magic he's capable of in making his life a lot easier to traverse. "I'm here to answer all your midday prayers/ You got me bona fide, certified/ You got a genie for your charge d'affaires/ I got a powerful urge to help you out/ So what's your wish? I really wanna know," the Philly native rhymes.
When the soundtrack was released in May Smith detailed how organic his creative process was fusing hip-hop into the film. "I messed around with Erik B. & Rakim’s ‘I Know You Got Soul’ under ‘Friend Like Me.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my god, I’m home!’ I started playing with the hip-hop flavor, and the Genie was really born in my mind from the music," he said in a press release.
