Throughout June, Billboard Pride celebrated Pride Month by honoring some LGBTQ heroes, including Crystal LaBeija, Sylvester and Divine. This week’s final herstory lesson comes from RuPaul’s Drag Race’s Miz Cracker, who celebrates playwright Tony Kushner.
Tony Kushner, Miz Cracker explains, won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993 for his play Angels in America, which merged drama and comedy to focus the important issue HIV in the gay community and beyond.
Miz Cracker notes that Kushner is her personal hero because “he put Meryl Streep in a musical sic], which is like the most gay hero thing you can do.”
The drag queen also states that earlier this year, it was announced that Kushner will be writing the screenplay for Spielberg's revival West Side Story.
