Watch Juice WRLD Discuss Writing 'Lucid Dreams': 'It All Revolved Around the Sting Sample'

Juice WRLD recently sat down with Billboard to discuss how he crafted his song “Lucid Dreams” as part the “How It Went Down” video series.

The rapper explains that he wrote the song in his family room when he was a senior in high school. He began with the chorus, then moved on to a verse, and continued writing pieces until he assembled them together like a puzzle.

Once Juice WRLD went to the studio, it only took him 20 minutes or so to record the track. “It wasn’t rushed,” he says. “I remember it was storming pretty bad that day…I think the power almost went out or something, it was crazy.”

The 19-year-old also makes note the fact that the song samples Sting's “Shape My Heart,” and that the entire track revolves around that sample.

“My producer sung me the beat, and then when I heard it, I was like, ‘Oh, wow, that’s a Sting sample,’ Juice WRLD tells Billboard. “I think it was like eight bars the song. That was like the beat that carried the whole beat, the melodies, all it. It all revolved around the sample.”

“Lucid dreaming is dreaming but you being aware that you’re doing it,” he explains the song’s subject matter. “I feel as though if you’re able to control your dreams you have more power and control over your mind, like you could reach more areas your mind. Therefore, I feel like it creates the ability for you to achieve more things in reality.”
