Police arrested a man named Tupac A. Shakur -- evidently the same as the late '90s West Coast hip-hop artist Tupac Amaru Shakur -- on Saturday night (Oct. 19). He was charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest, simple possession of methamphetamine and unlawful drug paraphernalia, according to the Johnson City Police Department press release.
Officers responded to a call at 5:41 p.m. in reference to Shakur, who already had active warrants from a different local sheriff’s department. Upon arrival, they saw the 40-year-old suspect in a fleeing vehicle that was later caught down the street.
But when they tried to make contact with Shakur, who was sitting in the passenger seat, he pulled a knife from his waistband as officers were trying to place him in custody. Following the brief struggle where Shakur was tackled onto the ground, a syringe and multiple baggies of meth were found on him.
Shakur was transported to the Washington County Detention Center after being arrested, where he was placed on an $18,000 bond. Arraignment is set for this afternoon in Washington County General Sessions Court.
The man's name has garnered mass media attention, since he shares it with the late All Eyez On Me rapper, who has been regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time and whose legacy remains decades after his still-unsolved 1996 murder.
