With music touching the lives of millions daily, it has become a huge phenomena for today’s trending artists to put out albums that end up breaking the charts internationally. Being pressured into delivering quality content, today’s artists are doing the impossible to please their audience. From collaborations, to inserting different genres, there’s been extreme reinventions, and there’s been polished refinements; breathless changes of pace and quiet, renewals of focus. The only thing that is consistent among our 5 favorites of the year so far is pure, unbridled quality.
Cardi B – Invasion of Privacy
Number one on our list goes to the queen of new age hip hop, Cardi B. Cardi’s astonishing transformation showed everyone what dreams are made of. The success that she has received in this past year shows just how much variety means to people. The mix of genres that she has introduced to her listeners and the various collaborations she’s scored, gave her the opportunity of touching the hearts of various audiences from every musical genre. Some of Cardi’s ever growing fanbase have supported her from the start and their loyalty is what helped her reach to the very top in such a short amount of time. It’s safe to say that people’s expectations were high for this album, after cards showed them what dreams are made of. Invasion of Privacy
set people into a frenzy with some of the most iconic songs like “Bodak Yellow
,” “Be Careful” and “I Like It.”
The queen was not kidding when she said she was going to deliver quality content and prove to the haters just how capable she is of ruling the rap world. Make sure to check out the album if you haven’t. It’s pure fire!
Drake – Scorpion
Drake broke the records this year with his highly anticipated album titled Scorpion.
After a series of diss tracks, it was clear that Drake had been keeping his fatherhood a secret from the rest of the world. Needless to say, this gave him a major boost, since he discussed the matter in his album and people were so curious to know everything. The fifth studio album holds various memorable tracks, however, we couldn’t help but notice the negativity surrounding this album and the topics that the rapper chose to discuss. Shortly after it dropped on Spotify, the streaming service announced that streams were hitting 10m per hour. By the end of Friday 29 June, it had reportedly been streamed around 132m times, breaking Post Malone's previous record
with his album Beerbongs & Bentleys
by a whopping 50m streams. Since there’s always room for entertainment, “In My Feelings” turned into the song of the year very quickly as it took over the internet with the “In my feelings challenge” and people from all around the world uploaded videos of themselves doing the challenge. You might hate him, or love him, but you can’t deny the fact that Drake is one of the most successful artists out there with a huge fanbase a strong set of skills.
Ariana Grande – Sweetner
The queen of pop, Ariana Grande released her album Sweetner
not too long ago and we’re absolutely in love with it. From her relaxing energy and positive outlook you can tell that she is a warrior and has so much to give to this world. Unlike others, Ariana doesn’t rely on tabloids to promote her music. You will never see her get into major drama and drop a diss track, but you will always find her surrounded by millions of fans from all around the world. Why? Because she’s talented and confident enough to let her work speak for itself. Sweetner
did not disappoint at all, in fact it made us fall in love with her even more. Her aura throughout the album expresses tranquility and resilience, and you can tell by “God is a Woman” that no matter how hard you’ll try to silence the singer, she will come right back up and thank you for reminding her just how powerful women are. Another successful hit would be her authentic “Pete Davidson” song that expresses everything she has ever felt towards her now fiancee and lover. Ariana scored big in 2018 with the musical manifestation of a summer fling and then a ring
Travis Scott – ASTROWORLD
After teasing his fans for over a year, Travis Scott finally put out ASTROWORLD.
While everyone doubted Scott’s ability in delivering a good record after seeing the latest controversies and headlines surrounding him, the rapper left the doubters dumbfounded after releasing his best work yet. ASTROWORLD
quickly became a huge phenomena and for the first time in a year, the spotlight was on Travis’ work rather than his personal life. Introducing songs like “SICKO MODE” and “STOP TRYING TO BE GOD,” la flare gave us the experience of a lifetime. Outselling Nicki Minaj
, the hip hop queen had no choice but to unleash her raw thoughts on the whole situation, saying that Kylie Jenner’s marketing campaign on Instagram is what made him reach this many sales in the first place. There’s no denying that Kylie has a huge following and can influence millions at a time, but it’s less likely for people to buy an album if they’re not really into the music. Just putting our thoughts out there…
Kali Uchis – Isolation
Kali Uchis has taken part in many successful collaborations, but it was time for her to finally show the world her true exotic colors. The “Dead to Me” singer collected some of her best works and created this magnetic album titled Isolation.
Leaning towards funk, the singer showcased a set of various tracks that highlighted her sumptuous voice as well as unique signature style. With a rich set of skills, no wonder why she has been collaborating with some of the big names so far. Kali’s album is anything but flat. Each track delivers a unique taste and takes the audience into the singers private world, where birds nest in your hair and flowers bloom in the shape of humans. Confused by this statement? Just check out her “After the Storm” video. You can thank us later…
The Weekend – My Dear Melancholy
There’s always that one artist who can never disappoint. For us, it’s always been The Weekend. With his resilient voice and the jar of emotions he puts in every song, The Weekend has been breaking our hearts ever since he started his career. The powerful emotions he showcases why performing always leaves the crowd screaming for more. My Dear Melancholy,
reaped undeniably rich rewards from his torrid love life. The strong masculinity of his voice has left many speechless and added a new element to the genre. His on and off romance
with beautiful women has let The Weekend’s creativity reach new dimensions, ones that we never saw coming. “Call Out My Name” became an instant hit after being released due to the fact that it had a significant story behind it. The song takes you on an emotional ballade where you can feel the love and frustration collide together. Definitely something fresh and new to add to the artists’ resume.
Pusha-T – DAYTONA
It’s safe to say that Pusha-T’s DAYTONA
exceeded all expectations when it arrived in the first chaotic release of G.O.O.D. Most of us were anticipating innovative production, expertly-delivered raps, and a general polish; and we got all of that, plus some. But we also received an album that exudes a sense of ‘legacy’ that was apparent even on the first listen. Pusha-T has had a very long career with countless stories to tell, and it’s apparent that his creative efforts are paying off with each release.
A$AP Rocky – ‘TESTING’
A$AP Rocky’s Testing
is loud, frenetic, spastic, and about as vibrant as rap can be. The songs are busy, crowded with radiant instrumentation and stacked vocals, and rarely take time to breathe. It’s a welcome addition to a genre that has become so occupied with monotonic and overly simplistic results. Rocky has shown resilience towards a flat career. He’s constantly showing everyone how change gives your career an extra boost and keeps your loyal followers cheering on you for more. Rocky has always shown an enthusiasm for going against the rules in an effort to stand out among his peers. Those same qualities exist on tracks like “Fukk Sleep”, where he effortlessly shifts between energies on a song that somehow manages to be both soothing and ravaging.
Post Malone – beerbongs & bentleys
Post Malone’s rose to fame came with 2015’s hugely successful ‘White Iverson’, then replicated its success with debut album ‘Stoney’, which racked up hundreds of millions of streams. Now enjoying an even higher level of fame and riches than he was bragging about on his 2016 Quavo team-up ‘Congratulations’, the LA-based artist finds it difficult to stop playing the isolated rockstar victim here, despite guest features from hip-hop big-hitters like Nicki Minaj, 21 Savage “Sometimes feel like I got no friends”, he sings on opener ‘Paranoid’. Beerbongs & bentleys broke records
up until Drake’s Scorpion
album. Many of the songs in this album deal in wavy synths and trap beats, but a few tracks show a desire for experimentation that reflects poorly on the rest of the album. Here, Post’s vocals reach past their shaky foundations to deliver some much-needed authenticity.
Lykke Li – so sad so sexy
Lykke Li is on a path of reinventing herself with her latest album titled so sad so sexy.
The album opens with one of its most powerful tracks, “Hard Rain.” Li’s harmonies flicker underneath the main hook, and electronic percussion and soft synths wash over the song’s first verse. After setting a trap-inspired tone, Li goes hard on the second track, “Deep End”. It’s at this moment in so sad so sexy that Li showcases her unapologetic fearlessness for stylistic experimentation. It might not be a far cry from the musical landscape of today, but it’s vastly different from anything Li has previously released, and it’s a welcome sonic shift. Make sure to check the Swedish star’s latest creations. She definitely upgraded this time!
