Save for hopping atop a large fallen tree on South Carolina's Edisto Beach, Tom Mackell didn't make a lot of stretches in filming his first music video "Moonlight," premiering exclusively on Billboard today (Sept. 27). The song is from his current EP, A Life I Once Knew, and as the New Jersey-based singer-songwriter tells Billboard, "What you see is what you're getting."
The clip shows Mackell strolling around the beach, guitar in hand, singing what he calls a lighthearted, "beach hang song" accompanied by animated, doodle-like accents drawn directly from the lyrics. "It's a little cliché," Mackell concedes, "but it's just saying to live in the moment a little bit and let the song take you on the ride. If you can forget about everyday life for a few minutes with this song, I've accomplished my goal. I think it worked out to be that way."
Mackell has been working on another video, for the EP track "Open Road," and he's excited about making inroads in that direction. "I think the visual aspect is definitely helping me get the story across and the whole vibe across and helping me building that connection a little bit more," he says. "I plan to include more and more visual work along with my music."
Mackell considers A Life I Once Knew his "most legitimate release" so far, following some earlier, independent EPs. He has a batch of new songs recorded as well, though, he notes nothing that's shaping up to be an album yet.
“We have some singles, and I'm writing more music, by myself and with co-writers in and out of Nashville for the next release,” he says. “I've been building my fan base pretty grassroots since I started out; each time I feel like it's pushing a little bit ahead, and now that I'm doing videos it feels like another leap forward."
