Miami became an even more rhythmic place than usual this past weekend, as Rolling Loud 2019 touched down in the spacious grounds of Hard Rock Stadium. Florida's biggest hip-hop festival celebrated its fifth anniversary and it was an event for the ages.
A variety of artists like 21 Savage, Lil Baby, J.I.D, Megan Thee Stallion, YG and more blessed the various stages, treating fans to three straight days of nonstop hip-hop. The blistering heat, fleeting rainfall and two false alarms could not stop the waves of people from seeing their favorite artists in action.
To celebrate the momentous event, Billboard gathered the top ten moments from the exciting weekend.
Waka Flocka Flame Claims He’s The Originator of the Hip-Hop Mosh Pit
Mosh pits have become a staple at hip-hop concerts for the last few years now, and Waka Flocka made a claim as the originator during his explosive set at Rolling Loud. The rapper blazed through his hard-hitting bangers like “O Let’s Do It,” “Grove St. Party” and “Hard In Da Paint”; Waka’s energy was unmatched in Miami, as fans were drawn to the mayhem happening at the Monster Energy stage. Waka capped the thrilling moment with an EDM-inspired session of music that caused the crowd to jump in unison.
Meek Mill Surprises Rolling Loud For The Second Year In A Row
After Lil Wayne canceled his set over a mandatory security check, Meek Mill filled in the void with an impromptu performance over at the Audiomack stage. After hitting the stage with YG and Rick Ross earlier in the day, the Philadelphia native was more than ready for his surprise set as he got the crowd moving with exhilarating renditions of “Uptown Vibes” and “On Me.” As fans rushed to get a glimpse of the Dreamchasers captain, Meek mentioned that he wasn’t supposed to be in attendance but wanted to rock out with energetic crowd. To thank them for the huge amount of support they gave him, Meek surprised the audience once more bringing out Nav for their collaboration “Tap.”
DaBaby Tosses Pounds of Faux-Marijuana Into The Crowd
After raising eyebrows by appearing in nothing but a diaper at SXSW in 2017, DaBaby turned heads again with his Rolling Loud outing in Miami this past weekend. During his late night set on Friday, DaBaby was in a giving mood: in the middle of performing his song “Gorilla Glue,” the Charlotte-bred rapper and his entourage tossed bags upon bags of sealed marijuana into the crowd. The audience roared at the charitable act and proceeded to jump as high as they can to get a grasp of one of the sealed plastic bags. It was later revealed on social media that the bags were actually filled with grass.
Playboi Carti Represents The Red-Hot Spirit of Hip-Hop’s Youth
On Sunday night (May 12), Playboi Carti channeled the energy of hip-hop’s youth throughout his eruptive set at Rolling Loud. Fans let go of all restraint as they raged alongside the sounds of “Dothatshit!,” “R.I.P.” and “Shoota”; with beads of sweat falling down his face, Playboi Carti basked in the pandemonium, running across the stage to feel every bit of energy from each part of the crowd. Carti took some time to notify the rabid crowd of his asthma condition, but he refused to let it stop him as he climbed the DJ booth and commanded the audience with deafening screams.
DMX Turns Back The Clock
With as many fans as there were present for hip-hop’s new generation at Rolling Loud, DMX brought droves of music lovers to the main stage on Sunday afternoon. With his trademark passion, the 48-year-old rapper took the audience down memory lane with timeless hits like “We Right Here,” “Where The Hood At” and “Ruff Ryders' Anthem.” X received some of the biggest reactions of the weekend, and he smiled at the massive support the crowd was giving him throughout his brief set.
Kid Cudi Rages On
Kid Cudi closed out the weekend with a calming yet lively performance on Sunday night. Standing in front of a mountain-like backdrop, the Man on the Moon MC embraced the energy of the crowd. His melodic hums flowed through the Miami air and had fans swaying to the sounds of “REVOFEV,” “Marijuana” and “Erase Me.” Cudi also brought out Quavo to preview a bumping new collab that left the audience salivating at the promising track. Cudi, who is also known as Mr. Rager, told the crowd he knew what they were waiting for as their cheers allowed him to commence the rage fest with the David Guetta-assisted “Memories” and the Steve Aoki remix to “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare).”
Offset and Cardi B Erase Rolling Loud L.A. Debacle
After Offset was ridiculed on Twitter for embarrassing his wife Cardi at Rolling Loud Los Angeles last December, the reunited couple showed the Miami crowd that that was a distant memory with a thrilling performance of their hit record “Clout.” After Offset performed his swift verse, Cardi bolted on stage to join her husband and the rest of Migos in an all-out turn-up.
Hometown Rappers Put on For the City
Miami has been contributing to the hip-hop scene in a major way as of late, and the 305 was well-represented at Rolling Loud. To go along with the many XXXTENTACION tributes, the new generation of Miami rappers put their city on their backs and gave their hometown crowd an amazing representation of the Magic City. Denzel Curry got the vibes going with a marching band, while Lil Pump moshed with his fellow Miami natives. Other artists like Smokepurpp, SpaceGhostPurrp, Yung Miami and more got in on the action and gave Rolling Loud a taste of what their city has to offer in hip-hop’s evolving scene.
Lil Uzi Vert Announces He’s Finished With Eternal Atake
After giving fans an exciting set that included spirited renditions of “444+222” and “WDYW” on Sunday night, Lil Uzi Vert gave a huge detail on his elusive album Eternal Atake. “I’m not going to lie. The other night I finished the last song to the album,” Uzi revealed to the boisterous crowd. “Are you ready for my album?” he asked. The crowd cheered before Uzi abruptly dropped his microphone and left the stage with a sly “okay, bye” response.
Cardi B Heats Up Miami With Scorching Performance
After a false security alarm had concertgoers running for safety, Cardi B brought the vibes back with a sultry run through of her catalog of chart-topping hits. Dressed in a tight neon-pink bodysuit and diamond-studded jewelry, Cardi led the Bardi Gang through electrifying performances of “Money Bag,” “Bartier Cardi,” “Bickenhead” and more. The Invasion of Privacy rapper twerked across the massive Loud Stage for “She Bad” while dousing herself in water to cool down before getting into a fiery performance of “Drip.”
