There may be no modern music character more chameleonic than Justin Bieber. It's not just his sound that has matured, but his reputation, too, has run the gamut emotions and social opinions.
The Canadian singer started as a tween heartthrob; his impressive YouTube videos caught the eye music manager Scooter Braun, and at 13, he was flown to Atlanta to record demos. That's when he met Usher, and soon, he was the internationally-known singer's closest apprentice.
Immediately, Bieber began making waves on the charts. In 2010, his song "Baby" featuring Ludacris reached No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. He's had ten such hits to date, half them hitting No. 1, but along the way, he grew up fast and wild, and he soon earned the ire anyone outside the "Belieber" clan, maybe even some those fans. His bad boy image almost buried him, but a chance collaboration with Skrillex and Diplo's Jack U changed the course his career forever.
Today, Bieber is back in the good graces most, and his last album Purpose earned him even more fans. He's all grown up, and so is his music, and his whole catalog continues to inspire singers, producers and musicians across the musical landscape. Today, we celebrate his triumphant story and career with 10 our favorite Justin Bieber covers. Iconic singers in their own right have tried their hand at his hits. Which one is your favorite?
Justin Bieber – "Die In Your Arms" (Ariana Grande Cover)
Back in 2012, Ariana Grande was better known for her acting career than her insane, Mariah Carey-esque voice. She starred on Nickelodeon's Victorious, and while she released a track on the show's soundtrack, this cover Justin Bieber's single from third album Believe helped prove her stunning vocal chops. It introduced her skills to a generation that continues to show the superstar love, and we've got to show it love on a list like this.
Justin Bieber – "Sorry" (The Vamps Cover)
British pop rockers The Vamps hit the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge to give a rowdy rendition this Purpose No. 1. They handle the island flair with punch and there's serious percussion going on. Something the Biebs can probably appreciate, being a drummer himself.
Justin Bieber – "Sorry" (The 1975 Cover)
Another UK band takes on "Sorry," this time during a huge live performance. The 1975 are known for hard-hitting lyrics with smart sass, and they lend a serious soulful quality to the Bieber song. Broad percussion and horns provided by a live orchestra take "Sorry" to new heights. They let the audience go ahead and sing the chorus, because let's face it, everyone knows the words. This, too, comes courtesy BBC Radio 1.
Dance fans should recognize Conor Maynard from his work with Cash Cash and R3hab on "All My Love" and "Hold On Tight," respectively. Here, we see the "Contrast" singer get with his buddy Anth to give a performance Purpose favorite "Love Yourself" with so much raw honesty, it's like the song becomes his own. Classic acoustic guitar and finger snaps give the tune some backbone, sparse as the original. Anth certainly does with his original rap verse, and Maynard adds some his own flavor, too.
Justin Bieber – "Love Yourself" (Alessia Cara Cover)
Back in 2015, Alessia Cara couldn't help but put her own spin on "Love Yourself," either. This intimate cover came a year before Cara's first Hot 100 hit, "Here." It seems the starlet cut her teeth on Bieber's tunes, and we love her silky, soulful version over simple, self-played acoustic guitar. Stay tuned for the cute outtakes at the end the video.
Justin Bieber – "Sorry" (William Singe Cover)
William Singe is a multi-talented musician. He creates his own backing tracks with loops and layered tracks, and this cool R&B take on "Sorry" showcases his work on guitar, keys and the mic. How does he hit those high notes? This is one steamy version "Sorry" you never could have seen coming. It's for the grown-and-sexy, to be sure.
Justin Bieber – "Love Yourself" (Dua Lipa Cover)
Dua Lipa is one the hottest things in the world right now. Back in 2016, she was still working her way up the ranks, and stopped by UK radio station Capital FM for a quick cover performance Bieber's hit "Love Yourself." Her now famous dark mezzo gives new twang to the familiar hit. A few months later, Lipa got her first Hot 100 hit with "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)."
Justin Bieber – 'Love Yourself' (Halsey Cover)
Dance fans know Halsey as the feature on The Chainsmokers' "Closer," but course, she's got plenty hits on her own. In 2016, she came through Australian radio station triple j's studio to perform "Love Yourself" for its popular cover segment Like A Version. A year previously, she featured on Bieber's own hit "Feeling," which peaked at No. 31 on the Hot 100. Halsey does a fiery take with a live band in the studio for a version that'll stick with you.
Justin Bieber – "Boyfriend" (Cimorelli Cover)
"Boyfriend" was a real career changer for Bieber. It was his adult coming out jam, f 2012 album Believe. It's a real cool jam that saw him take on a more mature sound, and this cover by California singing crew Cimorelli has a lot energetic charm. The ladies turn the lyrics around to tell the story from a female perspective. Cimorelli has done a lot growing since 2012, but this video will definitely put a smile on your face.
Justin Bieber – "Never Let You Go" (Austin Mahone Cover)
Speaking never letting go, Austin Mahone grabs an acoustic guitar to show his skills on this old school classic. From 2010's My World 2.0, a really young Mahone shows why he could be a Bieber runner up. He's following directly in Bieber's footsteps, showing f his voice and his work on the acoustic for a performance that set his career on the path to success.
