Welcome back to Takeover Tuesday, where each week Billboard taps chart-topping artists and taste-makers to compile their very own playlist exclusive to Billboard's Spotify account. We give the artists free reign to base the list on whatever subject they choose. The only rule? Make it as creative and unique to them as possible.
Welshly Arms, the six-man blues-rock band originating from Cleveland, begin their run with Thirty Seconds to Mars on the Monolith Tour tonight (July 3). And after traveling the States this summer, Welshly Arms will play music festivals across the pond this fall in various European countries — not bad for a band that originally formed at a barbeque.
Coming together in 2014, the Welshly Arms members were invited to lead singer Sam Getz's house for some grilling and chilling. The gathering became a weekly event revolving around music, which drummer Mikey Gould describes as a “cookout and jam session.” “Sam would man the grill, I'd be in charge music, and the other guys would bring the beer,” he recalls.
So when choosing songs for their Takeover Tuesday playlist over Fourth July week, it only felt right for Gould and gang to look back on their BBQ hangs. After all, Gould says “It was ultimately these jams that formed Welshly Arms.”
Welshly Arms' fire-up-the-grill playlist features classic rock and R&B jams, mainly from the '60s and '70s. From a Solomon Burke '60s classic “Everybody Needs Somebody To Love” (“a song that we adopted very early on and would play live,” Gould says) to Aretha Franklin's undeniably amazing rendition “The Weight,” the band loves to revisit old musical times when the temperatures soar.
The ultimate summer song? “I Wish” by band-favorite Stevie Wonder. “This song always reminds me summer,” Gould declares. Check out the other songs below that the group will be listening to at their Fourth July BBQ, as well as all summer long while touring the country.
