The fashion world just got a dose of heavy metal. On Wednesday (Oct. 23), Metallica announces its partnership with Billabong LAB for merchandise inspired by five of their albums.
The first surfwear collection draws influence from the band's 1991 self-titled album (also popularly referred to as The Black Album). Featuring board shorts, a T-shirt, a jacket and wetsuit, they're are all emblazoned with Metallica's iconic logo and ready for the gnarliest waves. "Released in the summer of 1991, the instant classic simply titled Metallica didn’t need any introduction. They had already arrived,” Billabong's official website explains.
“This collaboration comes through Billabong LAB, a division that supports artists, musicians, designers, photographers," the site says. The website also features a brief clip that goes behind the scenes of the pairing, with the band members and professional surfers comparing a performance's energy to the adrenaline rush of the waves.
Billabong's new collaboration marks the second with Metallica, following 2007's Death Magnetic album-themed apparel that honored late surf champion Andy Irons. "We're so excited to draw on Billabong's longtime relationship with Metallica to celebrate their tremendous impact on surf culture through this premium collection," Evan Slater, the brand's VP of global marketing, explained in a press release. "Combining Metallica's genre-defining album artwork and Billabong LAB's forward-thinking apparel and wetsuit designs adds up to something far greater than the sum of all parts. We're blown away with the results."
The collection is just the first unveiling, with four more arriving monthly through March 2020. The other album inspirations haven't been revealed just yet, but the new line is now available to purchase on Billabong's website. Check out all the pieces below.
