Sturgill Simpson’s Tour Set For Big Numbers as He Tops Bandsintown & HipHopMagz Touring Index

After a top 10 debut, Sturgill Simpson leads the Nov. 16-dated Bandsintown + Billboard U.S. Top Artists Index, while rising to No. 2 on the global ranking. With a bigger surge in domestic online engagement than anyone other artist over the last week, data surrounding his 2020 tour’s announcement and on-sale project his most successful tour yet.

The Bandsintown + Billboard Index includes four new weekly charts: Global Top Artists, U.S. Top Artists, Global Rising Artists, and U.S. Rising Artists. The Top Artists rankings include all acts with 250,000 or more Bandsintown trackers, while the Rising Artists lists feature acts with 10,000-249,999 trackers.

These weekly rankings are based on percentage growth in overall engagement during a rolling month, including new trackers, ticket clicks, and event RSVPs (all four indices will update weekly, using data from the previous 30 days). Fans can become a “tracker” of their favorite artists on by searching for any given act. All artist pages host a complete touring schedule, links to music and merchandise, and allows fans to post show reviews. Each individual show listing has options to click through to purchase a ticket link (ticket clicks) in addition to links to rsvp within Bandsintown, by selecting “interested” or “going.”

While Simpson’s total number of Bandsintown trackers nudged just 3%, his tour dates experienced a 345% increase in clicks to purchase tickets, shooting him from No. 5 to No. 1 on the U.S. chart and from No. 7 to No. 2 on the Global Top Artists chart. The jump in ticket clicks should lead to a hefty amount of completed purchases, implying a new level of success for Simpson in the biggest venues of his career. We will track the tour’s success on Billboard’s  weekly, monthly, and annual Boxscore charts throughout 2020.

On the other side of each coin, Rex Orange County maintains the top spot on the Global list, while dipping to No. 2 on the U.S. ranking. Despite leveling off after last week’s surge to the top of both charts, his No. 2 ranking indicates that activity is still swirling regarding his own upcoming 2020 tour.

It’s worth noting that the blend of trackers, RSVPs, and ticket clicks benefits different artists in different ways. On the two Top Artists charts, activity is mainly fueled by ticket clicks, as these established artists have solidified their fan bases over the course of their careers. Over on the Rising Artists charts, it’s slightly more evened out, as emerging acts are in the earlier stages of building their respective follower bases.

Take Letterkenny, for instance. For the third week, the comedy act rules both Rising Artist charts. And while event RSVPs and ticket clicks are up 335% and 321% respectively, they also increase by 264% in total global trackers, compared to the 3% bump for Simpson and 8% increase for Rex Orange County. In fact, only three other acts on the Global Top Artists chart see an increase of 3% or more in trackers, while 15 acts on the Global Rising Artists chart increase by 10% or more.
