Shawn Mendes and Teddy Geiger Pay Tribute to Queen With Acoustic 'Under Pressure' Cover: Listen


With the much-anticipated launch of Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody taking place subsequent month, a handful of Universal Music Group artists are channeling their internal Freddie Mercury. The first of the bunch is Shawn Mendes, who teamed up with frequent collaborator Teddy Geiger for a breezy cowl of Queen's 1981 hit "Under Pressure."

Mendes and Geiger put their voices on the forefront of the stripped-down rendition, with Mendes' falsetto and Geiger's raspy tone complementing their plucky acoustic guitars. Mendes clearly didn't really feel underneath stress about emulating the long-lasting Queen frontman, as he didn't draw back from Mercury's signature energy moments of "Under Pressure" (hear carefully at 2:20).

"I’m so honored to have the ability to help the superb legacy of Freddie and Queen by doing a canopy of certainly one of my favourite songs, ‘Under Pressure,'" Mendes says in an announcement. "It was so thrilling to me to have the ability to do that with my shut collaborator and certainly one of my greatest buddies, Teddy Geiger, for a trigger that could be very near our hearts."

Though the music will not be a part of the official Bohemian Rhapsody soundtrack, Mendes and Geiger's homage to Queen honors the late Mercury with greater than only a cowl. A portion of the earnings from the "Under Pressure" cowl can be donated to Mercury Phoenix Trust, which was based by Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor (in addition to the group's supervisor, Jim Beach) after Mercury's demise to assist struggle AIDS worldwide.
