When RuPaul emerged on the red carpet at this year’s Met Gala, many fans were left scratching their heads. The theme of the evening was “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and yet the Drag Race host decided to not dress in drag, one of the campiest artforms to date. Now, RuPaul is explaining why he made that choice.
On the latest episode of Watch What Happens Live, a fan called in to ask RuPaul about his decision to not dress in drag for the event, and the star responded by saying that he would have been “mean” in drag, and he felt it would have been too obvious. “I thought, ‘Every man is going to dress as Divine from the John Waters films, and I don’t want to be what everyone else is,’” he said. “But no one dressed in drag, except for two of my girls, Aquaria and Violet [Chachki].”
RuPaul certainly wasn’t the only one who was criticized on the carpet of the Met Gala, with some critics saying that most of the attendees did not properly convey camp with their outfits. Ru agreed, saying that “most people didn’t understand what ‘camp’ meant,” before adding that his favorite look of the night was Celine Dion’s Oscar de la Renta fringe look.
The Drag Race host, who appeared on the episode of Andy Cohen’s show alongside Angelica Houston, also spoke about what it was like meeting Michelle Obama with Adele during the former’s book tour stop in London. “Mrs. Obama invited us to the afterparty, and she came over to our table to eat fish and chips, which was so good,” he said. “She was so personable and human, and we talked about everything. She’s a great person.”
