Robert De Niro knows his audience.
At the Tony Awards on Sunday night (June 10), the legendary actor — onstage to introduce Bruce Springsteen's performance — started in silence, as the CBS telecast cut out the audio for a few seconds. But what he said clearly drew a reaction, as the majority the crowd jumped to their feet in response. According to audience members in New York's Radio City Music Hall, De Niro said “fuck Trump.” Twice.
“I'm gonna say one thing: Fuck Trump,” De Niro said. “It's no longer 'Down with Trump'; it's 'Fuck Trump.'”
This is hardly the first time De Niro has spoken out against President Donald Trump. Just last week, at a ceremony awarding high schoolers with the American Writer Award, De Niro lashed out at the president. “Our country is led by a president who believes he can make up his own truth,” he said. “And we have a word for that: bullshit.”
