Rita Ora announced on Twitter Tuesday night (June 5) that the video for “Girls,” her controversial single featuring Cardi B, Charlie XCX and Bebe Rexha, is due out sometime today (June 6). The teaser features Cardi and Ora singing the track’s hook, the latter rocking a bright red retro top with futuristic visors.
While some fans have praised the song as an LGBTQ+ anthem, fellow pop stars Hayley Kiyoko and Kehlani have openly criticized the track. "It's important for us artists to use our platforms to move the culture needle forwards, not backwards," Kiyoko wrote in a statement on Twitter. She went on to call the song "tone deaf," and said it does "more harm than good for the LGBTQ+ community."
Kehlani shared Kiyoko's sentiment in a since-deleted tweet, calling parts the track "awkward," and that it uses "slurs" not sincere to the LGBTQ+ community. Rita Ora responded quickly to the controversy, saying "'Girls' was written to represent my truth and is an accurate account a very real and honest experience in my life."
