Quality Control Music COO Coach K on Drake & Migos' 'Monstrous' Upcoming Tour: 'We Got a Well-Oiled Machine Right Now'

On Monday morning (May 14), Drake shattered the Internet with the announcement his forthcoming tour with Migos. The 41-date tour will find Drake partnering up with his Atlanta comrades for a blistering summer jaunt, which is slated to kick f July 26 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

While Drake has trounced the competition the last three months with his indomitable run on the Billboard Hot 100 — his 15-week streak at No. 1 was curtailed by Childish Gambino's “This Is America” on Monday — his touring partners, Migos, have also bulldozed their adversaries with their smoldering output.

This year, Migos earned their second consecutive No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 with the release Culture 2. The project earned a whopping 199,000 equivalent album sales, topping their previous endeavor, Culture, which also debuted at No. 1 with 131,000 last year. At the helm their success as been Pierre “Pee” Thomas and Kevin “Coach K” Lee, who serve as the CEO and COO Quality Control Music.

Pee and Coach K's torrid run in 2018 doesn't simply stop and end at Migos' winning streak. This past March, Lil Yachty notched the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 with Lil Boat 2, while burgeoning artists such as Lil Baby and City Girls have caused tremors with the flavorful earworms. On the management side, Pee and Coach also successfully nabbed Cardi B and Trippie Redd earlier this year, bolstering their already formidable line-up rap stars.

On Monday, Billboard caught up briefly with Quality Control's Coach K to speak on Drake and Migos' upcoming summer tour, if a possible EP between both parties is on the way and his thoughts on Quality Control's successful year so far in 2018.

How do you feel about Migos teaming up with Drake for their forthcoming tour?

It was a good fit because Quavo and Drake are really good friends. They've worked on a lot projects. They really have a lot music together, you know what I'm saying? And, I mean, shit, but who else would have taken their place?] I mean, Migos had such a good year. The last two years they really put the work in and I think it's a really good fit. I personally think it's a really good fit. It's going to be a monstrous tour.

How would you describe Migos' year overall so far?

The year overall has been crazy, really. Culture 2 I feel like was some their best body work, you know what I'm saying. They're just getting better and better and I honestly feel like individually, they're just coming into their own now. Like, really tapping into whom they are. So, that's only going to make them that much better.

Are you guys entertaining a Migos and Drake EP?

I mean, you know, you gotta wait on that. We're gonna let the creators create and if that happens, that happens, you know what I'm saying?

Give me your thoughts on QC's year overall — because you have Lil Baby on the rise and he just put out his “Pikachu” record with Drake and City Girls released their new mixtape on Friday.

We're really excited right now, man. Like, me and Pee, these are some the goals and the dreams that we really wrote down, man, and talked about. And to see them all come to fruition, man, it's like a blessing. With that being said, I feel like that's just the beginning, you know? I feel like we're just tapping into things] right now. We've been in business five years, but I think these next five years, oh man! Because you know what? We got a well oiled machine now. We were putting that car together and now it's put together. Now, we're putting premium gasoline in it to keep it running. Like, it's altogether and we understand how to put the music out, when to put the music out and all our artists are making great music.

You know what's so crazy? When y'all came through to Fool's Gold in New York, right before “Bad and Boujee” came out, y'all were on the cusp something special. This must have been all part the blueprint.

Oh yeah. We always say, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon, you know what I'm saying? So if you keep a good pace, you'll finish the marathon. If you get out there fast, you might be in the lead, but then that monkey jumps on your back, you'll have to quit the race or something. It was all part the plan.
