On last night’s (July 9) episode Pose, Blanca (Mj Rodriguez) and Pray Tell (Billy Porter) gave an impassioned performance “Home” from The Wiz in what producer Ryan Murphy called the show’s most emotional episode yet.
In co-writer Janet Mock’s directorial debut, the show got real, calling attention to the underlying fear that lingers along the storylines these queer people color: HIV/AIDS.
In the AIDS ward a hospital, the two characters sing the powerful duet about their own resilience. Neither one a newcomer to singing, Porter won a Tony Award in 2013 for his role as Lola in Kinky Boots and Rodriquez performed as Angel in an f-Broadway production Rent and showed f her pipes in the 2017 film Saturday Church.
A turning point for the series, Mock says she hopes to exhibit the realness the trans stories in the most complete way possible.
“I really wanted Mj to sing that because that’s what she was doing, she was building a home in this brand new world,” Mock told W Magazine. “There’s such power in that song that I love so much and it makes so much sense in terms Blanca’s journey.”
With "Love Is The Message," Mock became the first out trans woman color to produce, write, and direct a primetime television show.
Pose airs on Sunday nights at 9pm EST on FX.
