Plain White T’s frontman Tom Higgenson spoke with Billboard’s Paul Costabile on the red carpet at the 2018 Tony Awards, chatting about his nomination for his work on SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical and his favorite Broadway shows all time.

Higgenson, who was nominated for Best Original Score for his work on SpongeBob, alongside the likes Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper and Wayne Coyne, explains that while he grew up in theater, he’s been doing Plain White T’s for so long that he never expected to be at the Tonys.

“Grammys, that makes sense,” he says, "But Tonys, it’s like, what am I doing here? I never thought I’d be here, so it’s super cool.”

“Who would have thought SpongeBob would be at the Tonys?” he continues. “Who would have thought Plain White T’s would be at the Tonys? Somehow it all happened and it all kinda makes sense.”

Higgenson is also asked what his favorite Broadway song all time is, to which he reveals that he is a “big West Side Story guy,” while he also loves Book Mormon. “I saw Mormon] a couple times in Chicago, and oh my god, that musical was so incredible. Whenever there’s that moment where the right song hits the right scene and it connects with you, it’s magic, and I feel like a lot these shows do that a lot.”
