Pharrell pays tribute to legendary music executive, Clarence Avant on his new song "Letter to My Godfather." The inspiring ballad dropped in time for the release of Netflix's latest music documentary, The Black Godfather, which follows the life and legacy of Avant. A multi-hyphenate, Avant is credited with discovering and managing countless black artists and producers, buying the first black-owned radio station with Avant Garde Broadcasting, and running the highly successful record labels, Venture Records and Sussex Records during the 1960's and 1970's.
In a statement released on Friday (June 7) by the singer/producer, Pharrell said, “Clarence Avant connects us all through his incredible impact since before I was born up until now. He’s the godfather to so many of us – and not just African Americans, most of the industry.”
