Parkland Students Put on Emotional Performance of 'Seasons of Love' at the 2018 Tony Awards

The audience at the 72nd Annual Tony Awards was in for a big surprise on Sunday (June 10), when Glee star Matthew Morrison welcomed kids from the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School drama department to the Radio City stage.

The students sang a pitch-perfect rendition “Seasons Love” from Rent, making for one the most poignant moments the evening.

Melody Herzfeld, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School drama teacher, was also awarded with the 2018 Excellence in Theatre Education Award. Herzfeld stayed with her students in a classroom in February as seventeen people were killed by a gunman in the hallways Marjory Stoneman Douglas High.

“Next to the passing my dear parents and in-laws, marrying the love my life and the birth my amazing sons and reuniting with my theater students, there has never been a more defining moment my life,” she said in her acceptance speech ahead the televised event.

“I remember on Feb. 7, in a circle with my students, encouraging them to be good to each other. And I remember only a week later, on Feb. 14, a perfect day, where all these lessons in my life and in their short lives would be called into action,” Herzfeld continued. “We all have a common energy. We all want the same thing. To be heard. To tell our truth. To make a difference. And to be respected.”
