88Rising, the collective created to push Asian and Asian-American artists to new audiences and global markets, is home to Amen rapper Rich Brian. But nestled in the 88Rising roster is the secret weapon, Indonesian R&B starlet, NIKI, who is gearing up to unleash her debut EP this month, featuring the lead single “Vintage.” NIKI returns today (May 2) to premiere “Vintage” and the accompanying video exclusively on Billboard.
NIKI feathers her sugary warble over a bubbly, pop-leaning beat as she sings about reuniting with a former lover who brings back all the old feelings she once had. “How have you been since I called you mine?/ You look so good in this light/ Got me reminiscing 'bout our good times,” she sings in the video. The feel-good visual finds NIKI in a parking lot with friends, dancing to “Vintage” from day to night.
“I couldn’t sleep, so I stayed up all night with a bag chips writing and producing,” she tells Billboard. “I wanted to make a bouncy, feel-good throwback that people would want to get up and dance to in the summer. Reuniting with an old flame, a vintage love. I feel people will really feel that zephyr vibe — a carefree carelessness.”
NIKI's upcoming EP, ZEPHYR, is due out May 23 88Rising. This month, she'll head overseas to perform alongside labelmate Rich Brian in Australia for a few dates.
