Swiss filmmaker Edward Berger, known for his Academy Award-winning movie “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Netflix, has announced that he is currently working on a new spy series with the streaming giant. The upcoming series will be based on Christopher Reich’s Simon Riske book series and will be adapted by Rowan Joffe, who wrote “28 Weeks Later” in 2007.

According to a report from Deadline, the series will be based on the first book of the Simon Riske series, titled “The Take,” and will be directed by Berger. The plot revolves around a freelance spy who is hiding in a London garage and becomes involved in an international hunt for a stolen letter that could have catastrophic consequences for the world. The Simon Riske series is expected to have the explosive action of the James Bond movies with the gritty realism of the Bourne franchise.

The series will be produced by See-Saw Films and eOne, and is expected to be a major hit for Netflix when it is eventually released.

Berger’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” was one of the biggest surprises at this year’s awards season, receiving the award for ‘Best Film’ at the BAFTAs and four Academy Awards, including ‘Best Achievement in Cinematography’, ‘Best Original Score’, and ‘Best Achievement in Production Design.’ Although many believed that it would win ‘Best Picture’ at the Oscars, the film fell short to the Daniels movie “Everything, Everywhere All at Once,” which won the most significant award of the night, along with acting wins for Michelle Yeoh for ‘Best Leading Actress’ and Jamie Lee Curtis for ‘Best Supporting Actress.’

Berger’s work on “All Quiet on the Western Front” has demonstrated his ability to create powerful, emotive films, and his latest project is likely to be no different. With his proven track record of success, audiences can look forward to a thrilling and thought-provoking spy series from the talented filmmaker.
