Since 2016, Mustard has been grooming 23-year-old burgeoning singer Ella Mai. With three EPs under her belt, the dynamic duo struck gold when Mai unleashed her silky single "Boo'd Up." Glazed with love and endearment, Mai watched her record peak to No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, all while earning platinum status. Last week, "Boo'd Up" received the remix treatment, as Nicki Minaj and Quavo sprinkled their flavorful sounds onto the record.
For Mustard, he believes his golden star is just warming up.
"I don't think she has a ceiling," Mustard told Billboard in regards to Mai's upside as an artist. "I refer to her as 'The GOAT,' because people have yet to see what she can do and how talented she is. I think with me and her working closely together like we do and with her being signed to me, that's like my prodigy. I think there's no ceiling with what she's going to do. I don't even know how to explain what she's going to do, but I think she's one the greatest. She's talented and she has a good head on her shoulders. She's definitely focused. I can't wait for the world to hear her album and what we've been working on and what I've always seen in her from day one."
Last month at the 2018 BET Awards, Mai spoke about her chemistry with Mustard and applauded the producer on his patience and willingness to help her grow in the studio. "It's deeper than the music when it comes to me and Mustard," Mai told Billboard. "He's like a big brother, and I'm so thankful to have a mentor like him to advise me. Even though he gives me a lot creative control, I always go to him like, 'Do you like this?' It's so cool that it's always a collaborative effort. He never makes me feel pressured or anything. He's amazing."
Currently, "Boo'd Up" sits at No. 7 on the Hot 100. Next month, Mai will embark on her first headlining tour.
