Metallica's Kirk Hammett & Rob Trujillo Inject Some Metal Into Prince's 'When Doves Cry': Watch

Metallica honored another hometown hero on their WorldWired tour Tuesday night (Sept. 4) in Minneapolis when the monsters metal put a unique spin on Prince’s “When Doves Cry." The interpretation the song came during guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Rob Trujillo’s segment "Rob & Kirk’s Doodle," with the pair leaving the towering guitar intro f the 1984 Prince classic as they transformed it into a harder edged rumble courtesy Trujillo’s gruff vocals and Hammett's chunky guitar strumming.
Between Trujillo pumping away at his bass on the song that had no bass and flipping Prince’s smooth vocals into a more growly sound, the cover was truly unique. The outcome was a heavy, menacing version the naturally upbeat, funky track and although the pair definitely did their thing, the cover gave f an ominous vibe that some fans weren't feeling.
Check out a few the responses below.
Metallica will continue their North American tour until March 2019 with the next stop being Lincoln, Nebraska, on Thursday (Sept. 6).
