Mark Ronson debuted "Find U Again," his sugary sweet, vocoder-heavy collab with Camilla Cabello and Tame Impala's Kevin Parker, on Thursday (May 30) premiere on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show.
"I'll try to pass the night away with somebody new/ But they don't have a shot when I compare them to you," Cabello croons on the track.
Ronson told Lowe that Tame mastermind Kevin Parker — who is credited as a writer and producer on the track — sang him a melody that stayed with him for several years and he was determined to find a place for it on Feelings. "Then we're just… until Camila came along and wrote those verses and just sang that thing like nobody sounded anywhere near the person that we'd… we must've tried a couple of people, but I don't know what it was," he told Lowe. With Cabello's verses in hand the song was suddenly complete.
"When you're trying to write lyrics to a pre-existing melody, it is very challenging and most people usually just… she just nailed it. She cracked the code. I was just in my brain at a loss, and I was thinking the person that has to sing this song, it has to have such a combination of different things because it's almost like this laser, the way the voice cuts through. Very few people have that."
Ronson recalled driving around and hearing either Cabello's "Havana" or "Consequences" and having a lightbulb moment when he realized the former Fifth Harmony singer and solo star was the missing piece. "I wrote her a text and explained what the record was about and she loved the whole concept, the heartbreak and the crying-dancing-singing thing," he said. "But when she came in the day to work on it, I really did think that we were going to all be sitting there kind of slogging through lyrics and she's like, 'I kind of came up with something last night' and then she just sang it. The whole shit was perfect. We're like, oh this is going to be a short session."
"Find U Again" is slated to appear on Ronson's upcoming Late Night Feelings album.
