A few days removed from dropping off “Earth,”Lil Dicky sat down with Zane Lowe to talk about his new single. Explaining that “Earth” originated as a “silly” concept about talking animals, Dicky reveals that he eventually came to view the song as “his life’s most important work.” “What I want this song to do, is put others on the journey to discover,” he continues. “I don’t know how this isnt’ what everyone is talking about at all times. Literally, the Earth is falling apart.”
Zane appears more concerned with how Dicky managed to secure such a slew of high profile talent – though not everyone summoned answered the call. When asked about Kanye’s involvement, Dicky is on-brand in his honesty. “I just couldn’t reach the man,” he says. “He’s very difficult to get a hold of.” Eventually, he asked Kevin Hart to step up in Yeezy’s stead.
He explains that securing the first five – “Justin Bieber, Snoop Dogg, Charlie Puth, two more people” – helped facilitate the hiring process. “By the end I didn’t want to stop. I almost want to make a remix and get a fresh thirty.” He also reveals that “Earth” will be included on his upcoming album, which is by his own admission, “taking so goddamn long.” “Every song is like an idea,” he says. “I can’t just go into the studio and pop out songs. Every song takes me weeks to write. I’m two songs away from it being the dream version of my album. Whatever I do now has to last five years where I can listen to it and not be upset.”
He continues stoking the hype, fielding an interesting question from Zane regarding balancing “Dicky the creative,” and the “Rap fanatic.” “In my heart I’m a rapper’s rapper,” says Dicky. “I like rapping my ass off. A lot of my core fans love that. I also have a lot of pride in being able to write songs at this point. Hits! It’s not something to be taken lightly, it’s an art form in itself.”
