Lauren Daigle stopped to chat with Billboard’s Chelsea Briggs on the red carpet at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards on Wednesday (May 1), discussing the success of her song “You Say,” and how Miley Cyrus helped jump start her career.

Asked what the most meaningful reaction to her song “You Say” has been, Daigle tells Billboard that while there have been so many, one person told her that they were in the middle of writing a suicide note when they turned on the track. “Towards the end of their letter, they put the pen down and chose to stay on the planet,” she says. “It’s those kind of things…you can’t put your finger on it, it’s just powerful.”

She next discusses her upcoming performance on American Idol and that, despite the fact that she auditioned for the show a couple of times but never made it on, she is nothing but excited. “We actually fly out from here and go straight to American Idol, so I’m pumped,” she replies. “I cannot wait…I’m just pumped…I'm gonna get to see you guys again, give everybody the hugs.”

In the interview, Daigle also reveals how Miley Cyrus helped her find success. Coincidentally, the day after she was kicked off of American Idol, Daigle ran into Cyrus in a nail salon. Cyrus called her mother immediately and told her, “You’ve got to meet this girl. I can tell just from the way she talks she needs to be on radio.”

So Daigle flew out to meet Cyrus’ mom one day, and she gave her some encouraging advice. “Talk about [a] full circle moment,” she continues. “We were at the Grammys about to perform and Miley heard me backstage with her manager and someone in the management team and they came running up, and they're like, ‘Girl, thank you for doing this, we love your music.’ I was like, Miley was the beginning. She figured it out.”
