Los Angeles, CA – After seven years of marriage, Kim Kardashian has officially filed for divorce from Kanye West. According to TMZ, the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star filed the documents recently with the help of her attorney Laura Wasser. But unlike Dr. Dre and Nicole Young’s bitter divorce, the West-Kardashian split is amicable.
Kardashian is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their four children — North, Saint, Psalm and Chicago — which Ye has reportedly granted. The couple is committed to co-parenting together and presumably don’t want any complications to get in the way of their kids’ well-being.
Kanye and the reality television queen, who wed in 2014 during a lavish ceremony in Italy, have a prenuptial agreement in place and neither party is contesting it. They are apparently well into reaching a property settlement agreement as well.
Ye and Kardashian’s relationship has been public fodder for years. Last July, things appeared to come to a head during Kanye’s failed bid for president. At a South Carolina campaign rally, he went on a tear-filled rant about Harriet Tubman “not actually freeing the slaves” while admitting he encouraged Kardashian to abort their first child North.
Divorce talk started heating up after the New York Post reported their divorce was “imminent” last month. The couple has been living separate lives for some time, with Kanye in Wyoming and Kardashian in Calabasas, California. In a statement to PEOPLE, a source close to the situation said Kanye was struggling as the divorce loomed.
“Kanye is not doing well,” the source said. “He is anxious and very sad. He knows that the marriage is over and there’s nothing that can be done right now. He also knows what he is losing in Kim.”
This marks Kardashian’s third divorce. She was previously married to music producer Damon Thomas and NBA player Kris Humphries. She has yet to comment on the split via Instagram, instead opting to show off her recent SKIMS clothing line.
