When actor and singer Keiynan Lonsdale broke out the mold as the mysterious love interest in the teen rom-com Love, Simon earlier this year, he had embraced who he was. As an out queer actor and an out queer musician with his recent single “Kiss the Boy,” he was ready to take on the world.
Lonsdale does just that in his new song “Preach.” While the song may sound at first listen like a conventional upbeat love song, the singer told The Fader that he’s actually singing to himself on the track. “For me it’s about fucking with your own soul, agreeing to be on the ride together no matter what, and discovering/remembering that magic is real if you believe it so,” he said.
In the new video for the track, Lonsdale embraces that message self-acceptance wholeheartedly. The clip starts out with a black-clad Lonsdale grinding his way through an empty bar, while a later part the visual shows a much brighter, more colorful Lonsdale dancing in a field flowers and on a cliffside. The video ends with Lonsdale disintegrating, while a glowing rainbow heart remains behind.
Speaking to Billboard earlier this year, Lonsdale revealed that he doesn’t like to put a label on his music, in the same way that he doesn’t want to label his sexuality. “I sort don't even wanna label it, because I just wanna make music,” he said. “I think ultimately when I'm creating it, I'm not thinking what genre it's in. I'm just going to make the music and go from there.”
