With the addition girl group Dreamcatcher, boy band IMFACT and soloist Mia, the lineup for KCON 2018 LA has been finalized.
Event organizer KCON USA announced the additions Monday (July 9), bringing this year’s artist count for the West Coast leg the Korean pop culture convention and music festival to a total 14 “featured artists” and five “special artists.” The event has not given any details regarding what the differences mean, though in the past it has meant special, shortened sets.
A five-member boy band, IMFACT started out in 2016 and most recently released their single “The Light” in April. With seven members, girl group Dreamcatcher has gained a sizable international following thanks to their haunting, rock-pop style; they recently went to No. 7 on the World Albums chart with their Nightmare- Escape the ERA album, fronted by “You and I.” Meanwhile, Mia is an R&B singer-songwriter who recently competed on the Mnet television show Breakers.
KCON is produced by Korean conglomerate CJ E&M and its cable channel Mnet, and many the acts at this year’s KCON LA have been highlighted by the latter’s shows. Momoland (Finding Momoland), fromis_9 (Idol School), Wanna One (Produce 101 season 2), IN2IT (Boys 24) and TWICE (Sixteen) were each formed through competition series that aired on the channel, while other artists, like Chung Ha (Produce 101 season 1), Roy Kim (Superstar K4),and Nu’Est W (Produce 101 season 2) rose to fame through appearances on that channel. KCON’s headlining concerts are regularly broadcast on Mnet as episodes their M Countdown weekly music show.
Davichi, Wanna One, Roy Kim, IN2IT and Fromis_9 are all managed or co-managed by Stone Music Entertainment, a subsidiary CJ E&M.
This year also marks the first time since the first-ever KCON in 2012 when no artist from the No. 1 South Korea’s “Big 3” labels, SM Entertainment, is part the KCON LA lineup. Super Junior and Red Velvet, two that company’s most prominent acts, recently attended KCON 2018 NY.
KCON 2018 LA will be held at the Los Angeles Convention Center and Staples Center Aug. 10-12. Concert tickets go on sale this Wed., July 11 at 10am PST. Tickets for the convention and a variety specialized events will go on sale on July 13 at 10am PST.
