Future R&B has a new K-pop darling, and her name is KATIE. The soloist, also known as Katie Kim, released her long-awaited debut single “Remember” on Wednesday (June 6).
The English-language track showcases KATIE’s sultry tone through lush synths and hypnotizing percussion. It vacillates between smooth verses and a dynamic chorus that thrives on wailing, repeated “oh-oh”s and the singer’s emotive delivery the repeated, drawn-out earworm “We make love.”
The song comes three years after she won the fourth season the South Korean competition program K-Pop Star. After her win, Kim signed with YG Entertainment, the label behind BigBang, Winner, BlackPink, CL and many other popular acts. She recently moved to AXIS, a company founded by former YG Entertainment creative director SINXITY. “Remember” was created while she was still under YG, and the company is cross-promoting the song.
"Remember" precedes an album reportedly planned to be released later this year.
The music video for "Remember" is a vision luxury, with liquid gold graphics and high fashion acting as the backdrop to KATIE's singing. Though she primarily is featured on her own, part it features KATIE surrounded by others, including several prominent South Korean rapper, all whom she appears to be leading.
“I hope to sing for the neglected, abandoned, hopeless, loners, and outsiders: life, love, and light. This is just the beginning, remembering the journey behind me - daring to be free,” KATIE said in a statement to Billboard.
