Mayer's "New Light" jumps into the top 10, while DMB's "Samurai Cop" starts at No. 22.

Two veterans the rock music scene scale Billboard's Hot Rock Songs chart dated May 26, led by John Mayer, whose new single "New Light" jumps into the top 10.

The lead single from Mayer's upcoming eighth studio album shoots 38-7 in its second week on the chart, thanks to its first full week radio airplay, digital sales and streaming. The song is the chart's greatest gainer in the latter two metrics, selling 18,000 downloads and drawing 3.9 million U.S. streams in the tracking week, according to Nielsen Music. The sums send the song to Nos. 2 and 12 on the Rock Digital Song Sales and Rock Streaming Songs charts, respectively.

"Light" is already Mayer's second-highest-charting hit on Hot Rock Songs, which began in 2009. It's bested only by "Love on the Weekend," which hit No. 5 in December 2016.

Meanwhile, Dave Matthews Band starts at No. 22 on Hot Rock Songs with "Samurai Cop (Oh Joy Begin)."

Unlike Mayer, whose chart standing stems mainly from digital sales and streaming, DMB debuts with more a radio presence in the song's first week. "Samurai" debuts at No. 13 on the Adult Alternative Songs airplay chart and No. 49 on the all-rock-format Rock Airplay chart, with 1.2 million audience impressions on the latter list.

The No. 13 start "Samurai" is the second-highest debut on Adult Alternative Songs in 2018, topped only by The Decemberists' "Severed" (No. 11; Feb. 3).

It's also frontman Dave Matthews' record-extending 31st charted title on Adult Alternative Songs, which began in 1996 (combining his solo chart history and his output with Dave Matthews Band). Runner-up U2 has 29, with its latest, "Love Is Bigger Than Anything in Its Way," up 32-31 in its second week.

"Samurai" additionally debuts at No. 13 on Rock Digital Song Sales (5,000 sold).

While Mayer's "Light" is from a currently unannounced album, DMB's "Samurai" is the first single from Come Tomorrow, its ninth studio set and first since 2012, due June 8.
