J. Cole’s return to the music industry in 2021 has been a remarkable sight. His sixth studio album, The Off-Season, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and grabbed the largest streaming week of 2021 with over 325 million streams at the time of its release. Now, the Dreamville boss has even more reason to celebrate with some hardware coming his way.
At the 2021 BET Hip Hop Awards — which aired on Tuesday (October 5) — J. Cole took home the Lyricist of the Year award. In a stacked race, Cole was nominated alongside Benny the Butcher, Lil Baby, Megan Thee Stallion, Nas and Drake but managed to squeeze through the competition.
J. Cole has been nominated for the Lyricist of the Year award six times and finally won at the 2019 BET Hip Hop Awards. With his second win, J. Cole is now a nine-time BET Hip Hop Award winner. Cole was also nominated for Hip Hop Artist of the Year and Hip Hop Album of the Year at the 2021 show.
J. Cole isn’t just getting recognition from BET for his accomplishments this year. Drake made a surprise appearance during the opening stop of Cole’s The Off-Season Tour in Miami, and the 6 God took a few minutes to salute his friend that entered the Hip Hop game around the same time as him.
“I want you to understand something,” Drake told Cole in front of thousands of ecstatic fans. “You are without a doubt one of the greatest rappers to touch a mic. I wanna let you know, there’s way too many people in the world that think and know J. Cole is at the top of the pole position. I love you with all my heart, you’re my brother, you’re one of my favorite artists and I appreciate you having me out here.”
