The track is the band’s third record and latest “Evolve” track to top both Alternative Songs & Adult Pop Songs.
Imagine Dragons earns a record-breaking No. 1 on Billboard's Adult Pop Songs airplay chart, as “Whatever It Takes” climbs 2-1 on the list dated June 2.
The third single from the band's 2017 album Evolve previously crowned the Alternative Songs airplay chart for three weeks in March and April, and is now the act's unprecedented third track — and third from the LP — to have topped both tallies.
Imagine Dragons first led both charts with the first two singles from Evolve, “Believer” and “Thunder,” which ruled Alternative Songs for 13 and three weeks and Adult Pop Songs for six and seven weeks, respectively.
Now with three No. 1s shared between Alternative Songs and Adult Pop Songs, Imagine Dragons passes two acts each with two: Goo Goo Dolls and fun.
Goo Goo Dolls crowned Alternative Songs with “Iris” for five weeks and Adult Pop Songs for 17 frames in 1998. They followed with “Slide,” which topped the former for two weeks in 1998 and the latter for two in 1999.
In 2012, fun. led Alternative Songs with “We Are Young,” featuring Janelle Monáe, for two weeks and Adult Pop Songs for three. Follow-up hit “Some Nights” ruled the former for three weeks and the latter for one.
“Whatever It Takes” is Imagine Dragons' third total Adult Pop Songs No. 1 (to go along with four on Alternative Songs; in addition to its three leaders from Evolve, the band first led with “Radioactive” for 13 weeks in 2013).
The Adult Pop Songs chart debuted in the Billboard magazine dated March 16, 1996, after Alternative Songs had launched in the Sept. 10, 1988, issue.
All charts will update on Billboard.com Wednesday (May 30).
