Johnny Depp, Joe Perry and Alice Cooper return on June 21 with their second album.
The Hollywood Vampires will awaken again on June 21 when the all-star band led by Alice Cooper, Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry and Johnny Depp release their second album, Rise.
The 16-track effort from the group will contain mostly original material written by the band -- unlike their 2015 debut, which featured covers of songs by The Who, Spirit, The Doors, Harry Nilsson, Badfinger and others -- including the menacing, gothy lead single, "Who's Laughing Now," which was released on Thursday (April 18).
There are three covers included, however, as tributes to rock stars we lost too soon, including a version of David Bowie's "Heroes" (performed by Depp), Jim Carroll Band's "People Who Died" and Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory" (sung by Perry). Other tracks on the album include "I Want My Now," "The Boogieman Surprise," "We Gotta Rise" and "Mr. Spider."
"Rise is not only a totally different animal than the first Vampires album, it is unique to anything I've ever been a part of," says Cooper in a statement. "I approached it very differently than I usually do when working on an album. Each of us; Joe, Johnny, Tommy, and myself have written songs on this album. What is different though is that I didn't try to change any songs to be more 'Alice-like.' Because each of us has different influences, the sound of this album is very cool. I think that with this album, we are establishing what the Vampires' sound really is, whereas with the first album, we were more tipping our hats to our fallen rock 'n' roll brothers."
Perry adds that the album came from "pure creative energy" akin to the band's live performances. "The record showcases everyone doing what they do best without anyone looking over our shoulders," he says. "There was no pressure or deadlines, allowing us to write and record an album that is one of the freest and most honest sounding records I've been part of. I can't wait to perform some of these tunes live for our fans."
