Los Angeles artist Hana Vu is wary of losing herself in a new role on her latest single “Actress,” premiering exclusively on Billboard today (Sept. 5).
The song presents the admirable dedication to the task of adopting a completely new persona, but it’s Vu’s wistful-yet-wise examination of the commitment and sacrifice that comes with it that makes “Actress” pure Oscar-bait. Over a lush, enveloping production with the pleasant rush of horns and harmonies, the 19-year-old spins the abstract glamour of Hollywood elite into something that feels relatable, sympathetic and awe-inspiring.
“Based on the music and conversations in The Actress Roundtables, ‘Actress’ is about the compromise of personal values in order to be conventionally successful, and how that may manifest over time,” Vu tells Billboard.
Vu’s fascination with an actresses’ craft ultimately informed her upcoming double EP Nicole Kidman / Anne Hathaway, expected to arrive on Oct. 25 Luminelle. As the opening track on Kidman, “Actress” gives the singer-songwriter and producer the platform to instantly unite her perceived self with the self-made artist worthy of her accolades.
The double EP will be preceded by a Fall tour, starting on Sept. 18 with Phantogram. Tour dates can be found below the jump and on Vu’s page here.
