Grimes Says Fifth Studio Album Is ‘Way Done’

It's been almost four years since Grimes released her acclaimed fourth album Art Angels. Since then, the internet has enjoyed no shortage of other assorted news bits regarding the artist born Claire Boucher, a number of which teased her next musical adventure. But according to a recent Instagram post, the fifth Grimes LP could become a discussion topic sooner than you think.

On Tuesday (Oct. 15), Grimes posted a new press shot and down in the comments, an intrepid fan inquired about an album release date. Grimes stated the project is done on her end, but she fears other hangups could get in the way:

The indie in question is 4AD Records, her label home since 2012's breakthrough LP, Visions

Grimes previously indicated the new album is titled Miss_Anthrop0cene. She's released a handful of tracks in recent months — exploring a swath of sounds from nu-metal to driving synthpop (see below) — though there's no official word on which songs will make the album.

Once Miss_Anthrop0cene does arrive, it may turn out to be Grimes' final full-length. In an interview with Flaunt magazine last April, she explained her preference for other formats:

“I’ll never sign with another label. I’ll never have to put out another album… If I didn’t have this whole requirement to release an ‘album,’ I would have just dropped a bunch of music ages ago… Albums are trash unless you sit down and make a really good album. I’m not really that consistent. I feel like I would work better in like EP-ish formats.” A spokesperson for 4AD could not be reached for comment at press time.
