Frank Ocean is hosting his third PrEP+ club night on Thursday (Oct. 31), a special Halloween edition, which will take place in Maspeth, Queens in New York. The party will be hosted by Venezuelan producer/singer Arca, and is slated to feature Joey Labeija, Vegyn, Last Japan and DJ Heather. The poster for the party features a safety note that reads "costume weapons are still weapons!"
The 21+ party is slated to run from 10 p.m. until "late" and attendees can click here for information on how to RSVP and to see the poster. It appears that the event will be held at the Knockdown Center's BASEMENT space again, following up on last week's second edition of the throwback club night that is intended to imagine a time before effective HIV/AIDS prevention was available.
The Blonded-branded party is meant to pay "homage to what could have been of the 1980s' NYC club scene if the drug PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) — which can be taken daily to prevent HIV/AIDS for those who are not infected but are at high risk — had been invented in that era." After some initial pushback from some LGBTQ fans about the theme, Ocean issued a statement attempting to explain his vision for the evening and dispel rumors that Gilead, the company that distributes the HIV/AIDS prevention drug, had any affiliation with the event.
Not funded by Gilead Sciences … Funded by Blonded, independently," Ocean said. "I decided to name, what was otherwise going to be a night of lights and music inspired by an era of clubbing that I loved, PrEP+," he wrote in a post on his Tumblr titled "Re: Last night. "I started to imagine in an era where so many lives were lost and so much promise was lost forever along with them, what would it have been like if something, anything had existed that in all probability would’ve saved thousands and thousands of lives."
