Eden Takes a Picturesque Look Back at His Rise in ‘909’ Visual: Exclusive

Irish singer-songwriter EDEN is taking the scenic route to the next phase of his career with the jaw-dropping visual for his new single “909,” available exclusively on Billboard below.

The Dublin-based producer and vocalist — née Jonathan Ng — views his latest offering as a bookend to the breakneck year that followed the release of his debut album vertigo in January 2018. It’s a fitting send-off that finds EDEN reflecting on the rapid changes he’s incurred since, while also shedding light on the direction he is headed.

"I think with a lot of the changes and fast-paced movements over the last few years, there can be a kind of buildup of emotional energy,” EDEN tells Billboard. “Not that '909' was an explosion or an eruption of that, but through it I think I found a way out; a doorway.”

What unfolds is an honest personal journey that begins with a quiet, melodic meditation and builds into a staggering, lush crescendo.

As with previous videos for “gold” and “crash,” EDEN once again enlists the collaborative team Zhang + Knight to create a visual that reaches the same heights as the song. Shot in northern Thailand, the video follows a somber elder woman amongst breath-taking landscapes of dense, fertile forest and transfixing wildlife.

In a prepared statement, the duo shares that “the video explores the idea of living peacefully with your trauma, as fragmented images from decades ago quietly seep into a woman’s daily life.Tropical moths and an 80’s estate car embed themselves deep within her consciousness…the endless vegetation is omnipresent and constantly weighs down upon her.”

Though many of the lyrical and visual themes gravitate toward the lasting effects of the past, EDEN sees it as a tool to move forward.

“It feels fitting that [‘909’] is the release to kick off whatever comes next. Some people say start at the beginning, but I feel I work best starting at the end in a weird way."
