It doesn’t get much bigger than a Drake feature, and that’s exactly what Alabama rapper Yung Bleu got with his remix of “You’re Mines Still,” which was released on Friday (October 16) via OVO Sound and Bleu’s Vandross Music Group. But against all odds, it was a four-time NBA All-Star who made the whole thing happen.
In an interview with Complex, Bleu explained DeMarcus Cousins was responsible for getting Drake on the song. Boogie simply told him Drizzy would sound good on the song, then the rest was history.
“What originally happened is that DeMarcus Cousins reached out to him,” he said. “Cousins reached out to me saying that he was loving the EP and he was saying, ‘Man, I can hear Drake on this one. I can see Drake on this one. I love this one.’ And I was like, “Yeah, that would be real hard.” But I wasn’t thinking anything about it. I’m just like, ‘Oh, that’s like some shit that ain’t but a wish.’ So it wasn’t a real thought in my head, you know what I’m saying?
He continued, “Three days later though, Cousins had sent me a screenshot of Drake saying, ‘Send the record.’ So I had sent them the record and after a little while, I thought that he probably didn’t like it or hear it for real, so I just forgot about it. Then he wrote me on Instagram with the message that I posted and said “Let’s do the remake.” I said, ‘Hell yeah.’ And I just sent his team the song.”
Bleu revealed Drizzy sent over his vocals in record time, after initially thinking he missed out on the opportunity due to a missed FaceTime call.
“It only took a couple of hours,” he said. “Everybody on my team was thinking that if he did do it, it was going to take at least like three or four months to get it. He sent it back the same day.
“It was crazy because after he had hit me up, I went to sleep that night and he FaceTimed me at one in the morning, and I missed it. I was so mad. I really thought it was over. I ended up texting him the next day and talking about it. But he was mad cool. Drake is a real genuine dude. He really doesn’t care how big you are. If he fucks with it, he fucks with it. He’s a real musical person, like the genius kind.”
On his verse, Drake talks about having love for a woman despite knowing he won’t receive the same energy back.
“Ashamed to tell my friends how much I’d do for you/’Cause they know that you would never do the same for me/I wasn’t lookin’ for your secrets, they just came to me/And they contradicted everything you claimed to be/I took you to the club and you hugged on somebody that I know/And I know them type of hugs/Same shit I do to women when I know I used to fuck,” he raps.
The song appears on the deluxe version of Bleu’s Love Scars: The 5 Stages Of Emotions EP. News about the collaboration was first revealed on Monday (October 15), after Bleu shared a screenshot of his Instagram direct messages with Drizzy.
“Let’s do that remix,” Drake said in the message. “I just need a version of that song with a open verse.”
Bleu responded with, “Broooooo !!! Wtf ! Helll yea. Doing it right now !!!!” followed by Drake saying, “Let’s get itttt.”
