‘You all made it happen, I just wanted it to happen,’ Drizzy said.
Drake played an integral role in the revival of Top Boy, which returns for a third 10-episode third season on Netflix next week (Sept. 13). With the 6 God serving as an executive producer from a distance for the show, he made an appearance at the Top Boy premiere in London on Wednesday evening (Sept. 4).
Drizzy pulled up to the event alongside actress Ashley Walters, before eventually taking the podium to thank the cast and crew for allowing him to be involved with the production. He then reflected on the multi-year journey of turning this dream of an idea into an actual reality.
"I think September 13th is a really big U.K. heritage moment that you should be proud of," he said. "You all made it happen, I just wanted it to happen. To the cast new and old, the crew, the writers, the production team, everybody that pulled this all together, I really do appreciate it. I just want to say thank you so much for allowing me be a part of it."
HeyUGuyscaught up with Drake prior to the premiere to get his thoughts on the new season, his definition of a Top Boy, and how he became a superfan of the show. "I was watching it on YouTube," Drake stated. "I became really attached to the characters. There's a lot of parallels between Toronto and London. It reminded me of people I grew up with and guys that I know. I really just felt super connected right away, but then it disappeared on me. I did my research and found out it had been ultimately cancelled."
Channel 4 cancelled Top Boy after a four-episode season 2 back in 2013. Drake provided the impetus in having the show negotiate a lucrative deal to partner with Netflix.
