Rashida Jones directs and Donald Glover narrates a new animated PSA about workplace sexual harassment that was released Tuesday (June 26) for the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund. The legal defense fund was launched in January to help victims connect with legal representation and public relations assistance after facing sexual harassment at work.
Time’s Up aims to “shift the paradigm workplace culture” and was started after a wave sexual assault and harassment allegations against Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein came flooding in late last year.
Jones told BuzzFeed that those behind the campaign wanted to implement practical methods effecting change. “Everybody just kind raised their hand and took a job,” Jones said. ”It was such a new structure. It was a little bit like how you would handle a bake sale at the beginning.”
Jones handled directing a PSA about sexual harassment in the workplace, which focuses on how people “suffer day to day with these nuances and microaggressions, which we may not have the language to defend ourselves against.” Glover did the voice-over for the informational clip, and Jones says he was well-suited for the job.
“I really respect his ability to be a part and criticize culture at the same time -- I think it’s a really hard balance to strike,” Jones said. “And also to make really good shit! His music is great, his TV show Atlanta] is so innovative -- he’s got that balance that very few artists do, where he’s able to be true to himself and be honest and make it feel fresh. But also to say something and have people listen.”
But it’s not the geeky Troy Barnes from Community or the soulful Childish Gambino from “Redbone” that greets viewers. “He brings this kind cool, laid-back energy to it, which I think is good, because I think all us have kind preach fatigue,” she said.
Just because Jones and Glover are famous doesn’t make the Time's Up movement a Hollywood production. Yes, the takedown a famous movie producer helped propagate the larger defense fund component Time’s Up, but Jones is focusing on the intersectionality different industries where sexual harassment can be found.
