As part our Decade Drag Race week, we caught up with one queen from each season the Emmy-award-winning series to reminisce about the show’s journey, share some never-been-told memories and throw shade where shade is due.
Below, we spill the tea with the queen catch phrases, Laganja Estranja from season 6. Read all the interviews here.
Is there something that happened behind-the-scenes or f-camera that you’re surprised didn’t make the television edit?
Are there things that I would’ve liked to be shown? Sure — maybe my talent more. laughs] But, overall, no. I think the editors did a fantastic job. I mean, there’s so much that goes on behind the scenes. We film 12-hour days and two days is one episode. So, one hour all that is what you’re seeing.
Since your season aired, what have you gotten tired fans bringing up?
I don’t get tired anything because I feel lucky that all these years later, people are still bringing up stuff from my season, especially because I wasn’t on VH1. It’s such an amazing thing that people come up and ask, “Are you and Adore friends?” or “Can you go ‘okrrr’ and death-drop?” I think it’s amazing that I kind created a stamp in time and it lived on. One day people aren’t gonna want to take my picture, so the fact that people are still asking about the season is amazing.
Has there been a starstruck moment since the season aired?
I would say working with Miley Cyrus was probably my biggest starstruck moment. She was so kind and giving and loving. She invited me into her home and I got to choreograph for her. That was definitely such a special thing. She was a huge fan the show and the House Edwards. But Missy Elliot just reply to a tweet mine and I was pretty gagged.
Which one queen have you grown the closest to since your season?
Definitely Gia Gunn. We live together now. We’re roommates. Recently, a queen that I have grown really close to would be Bebe Zahara Benet. She and I just went on tour together in Australia and that was the first time we got to work together and I felt an instant connection with her. I have a feeling we are going to be long time buddies. We really connected. We definitely speak the same language.
Is there a lip-sync-for-your-life decision you would’ve changed if you were in Ru’s shoes?
Absolutely. I would’ve picked myself over Miss Joslyn Fox. Yeah, sure would have, sweetheart. I was on the verge a mental breakdown which would’ve been great TV. I don’t know why they said goodbye to me.
What’s one the most overrated runway looks from your season?
Anything Bianca Del Rio wore. laughs]
Did the right person win?
I do think Bianca deserved to win. I think Adore was a really close second and, now, with all that Courtney has done, it’s amazing. I think our top three is one the strongest top three’s in terms being out there in the world with their shows, with their own tours, with their own music.
