Excited about his nominations for the 2019 Latin Grammys, urban singer De La Ghetto arrived at Billboard’s headquarters in New York City on Monday (Oct. 7) to perform his first-ever acoustic live session for Billboard Live.
The three-song performance kicked off with De La Ghetto’s most recent single “Selfie” and continued with “Tu Te Imaginas” before wrapping up with a soft version of the Latin trap hit “La Ocasión.”
“This is the first time in 13 years that I've performed with a band,” De La Ghetto told Billboard as he answered fan questions about his nominations for the 2019 Latin Grammys, his music style and more. See some of the conversation below:
How has the transition of moving from New York to Puerto Rico affected your life and music?
I grew up without my parents. My father passed away when I was a baby. So I was bullied at school, they called me El Gringo, and that helped me to become the person I am right now because if you listen to my music, it is Americanized but with Latin flavor.
A lot of people are excited to see you at the Latin Grammys; who are you excited to see?
Me! [Laughs] Honestly, Anitta, Feid, [Daddy] Yankee.
Which artist do you want to collaborate with?
Don Omar. He is back in the game.
What advice would you give to artists who want to be like you?
Stay humble. Humble is the most important thing in this industry.
