Danny McBride Hung With Kanye West and Might Play Him in a Movie: Watch

Danny McBride has made a tidy career of playing blustering, often well-meaning, but idiotically bulldozing bozos. But his greatest acting challenge might still be ahead of him. The star of the upcoming HBO series The Righteous Gemstones visited Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Wednesday night (July 24) to hype the show about a megarich megachurch family and his post-Los Angeles Southern baller lifestyle.

After falling in love with Charleston, South Carolina, while filming the dearly departed series Vice Principals, McBride moved down there a few years ago and things have been super interesting so far. Sure, he told a hilarious story about the difficulty of making new friends as an adult man, and how his wife set him up on a dad date with her friend's husband that led to his new side gig breaking into a local quarry to steal prehistoric shark's teeth.

That's not actually the weirdest thing he's done in his new hometown, though. “I had a pretty interesting guest shortly after we moved there,” McBride told Kimmel. “One day I got a phone call out of nowhere and the voice sounded familiar, but I wasn’t sure who it was. I was like, ‘Hello?’ and he was like, ‘Hey, is Danny there?’ He was like, ‘This is Kanye West.'” He's not sure how 'Ye got his number -- it seemed like the rapper thought McBride still lived in L.A. -- and for a minute he thought someone was punking him. But West swore he was a big fan of the Eastbound and Down star and wanted to just come down and hang.

Kanye hopped on a jet and flew down and the new BFFs went out for a day on a boat. Seemingly not familiar with how swampy hot Charleston can get in the summer, McBride said 'Ye showed up in a heavy sweatshirt and sweatpants and said he'd be "fine" after his host worried that he might be overdressed. Sure enough, shortly after they got out on the water, Kanye was "dripping sweat" and confided that his assistant told him it would be cold in S.C. in July.

“He had an idea for a project that I think was a pretty brilliant idea,” McBride said. “He wanted to do a movie about the story of his life and he wanted me to play him.” The pair spent the day hanging out and talking during what McBride said was the "most incredible afternoon," which ended with Kanye watching McBride's seven year-old son play Fortnite.

“Are you sure this happened?” Kimmel wondered. “Because you’ve done drugs, right?” If Gemstones doesn't go well it might just come to life and Kimmel figures if Danny can play Kanye, he could take on the role of Kim Kardashian. "You move to Charleston and a lot of good things start happening," McBride chuckled.
