Dance music was well-represented on Saturday (Aug. 18) at Day One the fourth annual Billboard Hot 100 Festival.
Billboard Dance founder Matt Medved kicked f the festivities on the Hot 100 Stage at noon and then pinch-hit for an absentee Kehlani from 3 to 5 p.m, mixing a multi-genre musical cocktail ranging from South American electrocumbia to big room house, with tributes to Aretha Franklin, Avicii and XXXTentacion, and special guests including Michael Brun, BAYLi and beatboxer Honeycomb.
Meanwhile on the dance-friendly Beach Stage, Bad Royale and Frank Walker held it down with crowdpleasing remixes marquee artists like Cardi B and Galantis. Walker also brought out BAYLi for a performance her latest single, "Out For Love," and the singer's manager Adrian Grenier, known for his lead role in film and TV series Entourage, could be seen enjoying the set side stage.
The afternoon belonged to dance duos and trios. Phantoms premiered their forthcoming single with Vanessa Hudgens during a vibe-heavy live show featuring keyboards and drum pads, while hitmaking trio Cheat Codes threw a party on the main stage, complete with appearances by Fetty Wap (for their collaboration "Feels Good") and Grenier, who sang along to The Killers' classic "Mr. Brightside."
Diehard dance fans are rarely dissuaded by rain, and Saturday evening proved no exception. Krewella's fans were particularly tenacious, braving the downpour to watch the Yousaf sisters deliver energetic fan-favorites like “Alive” and “Team,” a guest appearance by Taylor Bennett, and well-received remixes hits by Migos, Daft Punk and Calvin Harris. Norwegian artist Matoma closed out the festival's first day on the Beach Stage by enthralling his soaked audience with standards like the late Avicii's "Levels" and there were no shortage smiles to be seen. Onwards to Day Two!
