Conor Oberst & Phoebe Bridgers Perform Rocking ‘Shallow’ Cover: Watch

Better Oblivion Community Center took on the ballad at their NYC show.

It's the song everyone wants to cover. From Kelly Clarkson to Nick Jonas, Tori Kelly and Ally Brooke, Brian Justin Crum, Lewis Capaldi and Lea Michele and Darren Criss, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's Oscar-winning "Shallow" is just to juicy to resist. And while Gaga and Cooper broke their web with their performance at the Oscars, Conor Oberst and Phoebe Bridgers -- aka Better Oblivion Community Center -- did their best to make the tragic ballad their own during a show at Brooklyn Steel on Monday night (April 1).

As you might expect, in a video captured by BrooklynVegan, the Bright Eyes leader and boygenius member made it their own, turning the already mournful ballad into an even more tale. With Bridgers on gently strummed electric guitar and Oberst lending his quavery voice to the opening verse, the spare cover drew howls of approval from the crowd at the April Fool's Day show. Oberst strapped on an acoustic as Bridgers leaned hard into the Gaga verse and the two met in the middle for the chorus.

And in case you were wondering, Bridgers had no problem hitting the song's vocal peak as the pair put an harder, indie rock spin on the ballad.
