Plus, a flashback to the first "American Top 40" countdown this week in 1970.
Welcome to the Billboard Chart Beat Podcast, where each week co-hosts Gary Trust and Trevor Anderson, from the Billboard charts department, discuss why what's on the charts … is on the charts, while also looking at current chart action in a historical context for even greater insights.
This week, Gary and Trevor run down Cardi B's latest achievements, as "I Like It," with Bad Bunny and J Balvin, hits No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Among Cardi B's chart honors, she becomes the first female rapper with two Hot 100 No. 1s, as well as the first female artist with two leaders from a debut LP since Lady Gaga in 2009.
Plus, Gary and Trevor welcome WNEW (Fresh 102.7) New York afternoon host Mike Adam, who discusses radio in the region and interviewing guests from Kanye West to Barack Obama. Was Adam nervous about chatting with the then-president? "I opened with, 'I told my wife I'd be talking to you and she was like, 'Maybe we'll become friends with them … and do you think we could have them over for dinner? … and does he like Puerto Rican food?!' He was like, 'I love Puerto Rican food. What's her specialty?' "
"That was the icebreaker, and he was just so cool," Adam says.
Wrapping up the podcast, a flashback to the first American Top 40 countdown with Casey Kasem this week in 1970, as, for the first time, the venerable syndicated radio show brought the Hot 100 to music fans on a greater scale than ever before.
